The word friend is too pale to describe her.

She is my sister, we live in this space together, filling it with music and essential oils to mask the harsh aroma for the overkill of garlic I use when I’m cooking. We laugh so hard that our stomachs ache and even though we see each other every day we never run out of things to talk about.

She has stood with me through so much, and I her. We are pillars of strength when the other feels like faltering and no matter how many people try to define us we know who we are.
She is laughter echoing in her room, followed closely by a notification on my phone of the meme that has her in hysterics, never one to keep the amusement to herself. She is goofy accents and funny faces. She is journals full of poetry and a keen eye for photography and she has a knack for creating something that makes you feel warm in places you don’t have a name for. She is unapologetic and quirky and her life is a canvas and she is the masterpiece dancing across it.

I’m grateful for the words we share. The visions we imagine as we sit on the floor, record spinning as the sun is rising. The food we eat together in the living room as one of our Spotify playlists sets the tone. This home, that we’ve made a safe space in a city that sometimes feels like a scary place.
This companionship is a warm embrace in a world where I’m often met with cold fronts and freeze outs.

So this is an ode to Asia:
To the bench in Princeton we made our own and the memories we made in a town that didn’t think our names were a notorious thing.
To the dirty soles of our feet cause we always forget to wear our shoes when we sit in outside our door listening to the sounds of the neighborhood.

To the velvet scrunchies and big sunglasses that sit in a communal pile on the desk, an offering of last minute flair before we leave.
To the late night talks and the empty bottles adorning our windowsill.
To Juni, the greatest cat in the world.
Raise your glasses to my roommate, my partner in crime, my best friend.

Happy Birthday Asia.
